We often speak of our hearts in terms of feeling, love, and emotion. Our hearts can be full, our hearts can soar, and our hearts can ache and break. We pay close attention to what our heart tells our mind, and how our heart makes us feel in a figurative sense - but when it comes down to it, we seldom focus on our heart as an organ. We give it little attention for its incredible role - we do not consider what it may be needing, how it actually is feeling, or what condition it may be in until, in many cases, we are absolutely forced to.
Celebrate World Heart Day with a reminder to care for our hearts when they are healthy in order to keep them that way.
As always, the simplest way is usually the best way, so here are some simple steps towards cardiovascular health:
- Eat a heart-healthy diet (easy foods to incorporate include yogurt, nuts, raisins, whole grains, and fish).
- Aim to get 30 mins of exercise a day (this can include walking, playing with your kids, cleaning out the garage -get creative!)
- Reduce risks to your cardiovascular health ( smoking, alcohol consumption, etc.) and stay on top of your regular medical screenings.
